Hoses don’t fit on your kitchen scales! To allow owners to estimate their horse’s body weight many estimation equations have been developed. These equations use simple to take morphometric measurements (e.g., height, girth circumference etc.) alongside breed etc. and allow owners to predict their horse’s weight without requiring access to expensive weighing equipment. However, many of these equations assume that the measurements taken are exact (i.e., without error) and they therefore fail to propagate this uncertainty correctly.
This project will develop statistical methods that correctly account for measurement error and more reliably allow the prediction of equine body weights from morphometric measurements. Good grades in STATS302 and STATS330 would be an advantage. You do not need to be a horse lover to take this project, but it might be more fun for you if you are!
